Types of maintenance and repair of industrial equipment

Timely maintenance and repair of industrial equipment helps to keep the equipment in working condition, reduce the financial costs of its repair, increase the equipment technical utilization ratio and reduce its downtime. In order to streamline and systematize information on repairs and maintenance performed at enterprises, a maintenance, repair and operations system (MRO) is being developed, which is a set of organizational and technological measures for the maintenance and repair of equipment, including its planning, preparation and operation, as well as maintenance and monitoring the operation of equipment, keeping it in good working condition, conducting scheduled inspection, cleaning, adjusting and performing other equipment repairs.

Maintenance of equipment – a range of works performed in the interval between scheduled and unscheduled repairs of production equipment.

Repair of industrial equipment is a set of actions to restore the operability of equipment that was disrupted during its operation.

Maintenance and repair of industrial equipment can be carried out by the operating or specialized personnel of the enterprise or with the involvement of a specialized organization, as well as representatives of the manufacturer.

The purpose of the maintenance and repair system is to guarantee the reliable and continuous operation of production equipment and mechanisms.

Types of repair and maintenance of equipment

There are more than a dozen classifications of maintenance, but the most popular and significant is its division into routine and planned maintenance.


·         Routine maintenance is carried out directly by the production staff at a specified time interval. This can be inspection and control of equipment after each shift, lubrication, temperature control, visual control of the wear of components and mechanisms.

·         Planned maintenance is carried out exclusively by the company’s repair service personnel or representatives of specialized organizations. After a set period of time, they carry out work on diagnostics, control of tuning and adjustment of the performance characteristics of the equipment, as well as topping up and changing oil, replacing filters.

Repair of industrial equipment is divided into routine, overhaul and unscheduled repair.


·         Routine repair involves disassembly and assembly of individual components and is aimed at ensuring the operability of the unit until the next scheduled repair.

·         Overhaul is carried out in order to fully restore the resource of the equipment. During it, the equipment is completely disassembled, components and parts are repaired. During the overhaul, partial or complete modernization of equipment is also possible.

·         Unscheduled or emergency repairs are carried out due to the sudden failure of equipment. It can be both routine and overhaul, depending on the consequences of accidents.

All results of changes in the condition of the serviced equipment during routine or scheduled maintenance, as well as a result of repairs carried out, must be recorded in a mandatory manner. It is most convenient to do this using automated control systems.

Automated systems are used to increase the productivity of maintenance and repair work, maintaining a single database of equipment in a convenient format and planning future work to ensure the operability of industrial equipment.

Maintaining a register of equipment. The system conveniently reflects the production and technological structure of the enterprise, which reflects each piece of equipment that needs planning and accounting of repairs.

Catalog of the system. Lists of possible types of defects, a list of all work schedules of the enterprise, work order details of repairs, equipment technical passports and information about all repairs performed are automatically saved.

Planning for repairs and maintenance. The system allows to specify the date of the schedule, the unit responsible for the repair, the list of repair objects and the list of types of maintenance and repairs. It is convenient to solve unplanned situations by creating a request in which is possible to calculate and take into account materials and labor costs for a specific repair.

Information for accounting. All objects are connected to the accounting system, which allows you to quickly transfer documents to reflect the fact of repair in accounting.
